Smile Project: Kirk Whalum

Today, we shot jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum, and Sandy Duncan and Vince Paul of the Music Hall for the Smile documentary. Kirk showed up on time and was ready. So, while we finished with lighting, Kirk went to makeup.
On set and ready to go, I call for camera and audio to roll. Just then a woman walks onto set, puts her purse down and carries a platter full of cupcakes to the bar area’s cooler. As we sat there in shock, well maybe shock is too strong, while we sat there stunned, she informed us that she had an event that evening and needed to set up, but would get out of the way as soon as possible. So we sat there and waited, and waited, and then even helped. Finally, she was set up and we could get started. That was a time we needed Michele or Alisa on set, so they could have screamed at her. So, from now on, I have a new rule. Each production shoot must have someone that can scream at people.
On set he reflected on Gretchen, the label and the jazz festival. Kirk had some very interesting things to say, some deep thoughts and a smooth manner.
