Crooklyn

Currently, I’ve been doing rewrite work on a feature about the country’s first black television station, as well as, writing the outline for a documentary about the first African- American to play in the NBA. We’re about 85% sure we’re going to create the latter. Coincidence would have it that about a week ago, I was in a meeting for the feature when the film Crooklyn was mentioned. This was the third time someone had mentioned Crooklyn in two days. So, I took it as a sign to watch the movie, and I did. Now, I know Spike Lee knows more than me, and I wish I could do half of what he has done, but to quote Robert McKee, “The movie Crooklyn doesn’t have a story.” I know my producer friend will hate me for saying this but I sat there saying to myself, “We’re 10 minutes into the movie, the story has gotta start soon.” With the same thought in tow, 20 minutes later, I said, “We’re 30 minutes into the movie; the story’s gotta start soon.” 50 minutes into the movie, the ever-present statement was stilled posed, but it never manifested. I hope the project we’re working on gets distributed just like Spike’s movies and tells a story.
