That’s what I came up with
Labor Day we shot at the Detroit International Jazz Festival. The shoot went well. We got good footage, a couple of impromptu interviews and some great performances. But there was an air of uncertainty that started the day. My initial plan was to play it by ear, why that was my plan, I don’t know. It’s always been my experience that playing it by ear returns poor results or no results at all. But with all of my years of experience that’s what I came up with.
Oddly enough things start to fall into place. Gretchen is there and we shoot some candid stuff with her. We see Denny, the President of Mack Avenue Records, and do a quick interview with him and we see Jim Gallert and Christian McBride and do quick interviews with them. Backstage we run into Kevin Eubanks and he remembers us, we talked and setup something between him and Gretchen, whom he’s never met.
But the best part of the day was when we were doing something with Gretchen. We’re standing in the middle of the street at Jefferson and Woodward. I go to block something with Gretchen and I come back to say something to Kevin Hewitt, our Director of Photography, and he’s not there. I look around and I look around and finally see him. Kevin is lying on the ground shooting peoples feet as they walk across Jefferson. There lying on the ground! This is the same person that got into a dumpster in February, so why wouldn’t he lay on the ground in September. My man Kevin!
