When I Need to Smile: Interview with Terry Gibbs
At the end of the day we headed to legendary vibraphonist Terry Gibbs’ house. It’s amazing that people will let us come into their homes and shoot. Even though the crew is small, we’re capable of tearing the house down in a matter of minutes.
Now, Terry Gibbs has played with some of the greats of jazz, so I was happy that he consented to do the interview. In the beginning, we were told that Terry could be a bit of a loose cannon, saying anything about everything, but everyone can relax - he didn’t let any cats out of any bags.
But what he did say was that he hadn’t played in a year and wasn’t very interested in playing, so we got him to play for us, using the same trick that didn’t work on Kevin Eubanks. Terry also showed me the difference between the vibes and a xylophone.

Thanks Terry!
